Poetter Hall was built in 1892 and was originally named Preston Hall. It was once home to the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory. This 36,248 square-foot building contained a drill hall, ballroom, large company rooms and a guard club. Notice the beautiful deep arches, massive corner towers and ornate wrought iron balconies.

SCAD was founded in 1978 by Paula S. Wallace, along with her parents May and Paul Poetter and her then-husband Richard Rowan, who took out a $200,000 loan to buy the college's first building which was the Poetter Hall.

The ballroom on the second floor served as the school's first library and has a unique floor mural that depicted scenes of books and book cases. Today the space serves as the May Poetter Gallery but the library's mural can still be seen underfoot.

The Potter Hall is part of SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design), a private, degree-granting university with locations in Savannah and Atlanta.
