The Georgia Historical Society is the oldest continuously operating state historical society in the Southern United States and one of the oldest historical organizations in the United States.

The main floor, reaching 36 feet with its three-story-high ceilings and two balconies, houses the Society’s library room. The vaulted window in this room were designed to provide maximum light and ventilation in the days when there was little artificial light and no air conditioning. The windows located on the third story were essential to relieving the oppressive summer heat and provided maximum daylight for the reading room in the main hall.

The Central of Georgia Railroad and Canal Company was chartered in 1833. By 1843, it was the longest continuous railroad under one central management in the world. The Central reached its peak in the early 1920s and was the largest employer in Savannah.

The Andrew Low carriage house was built in 1848 and was the Girl Scout First Headquarters. Juliette Gordon Low, who was the founder of the Girl Scouts, converted the carriage house into the Girl Scout Headquarters shortly after she founded Girl Scouting in March, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia.

The Jepson Center was open to the public in 2006. There are 7500 square feet of gallery space for major traveling exhibitions of contemporary art as well as permanent collections of art. The building has a 220 seat auditorium, community gallery, education studios and 3500 square foot interactive gallery for children and families.

The Jepson Center is also home to the original iconic Bird Girl statue, made famous in the Jack Leigh photograph on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

The Massie Heritage Center was named for its benefactor, Peter Massie, who died in 1841, leaving $5000 for the establishment of a school for the poor in Savannah. The Massie School operated as a public school until its closing in 1974, and is Georgia's oldest school in continuous operation.

Visit one of the world's most powerful museum experiences, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. This 90,000-square-foot museum is dedicated to preserving the history and stories of the Eighth Air Force, the "greatest air armada of all time."

The famous World War II squadron the Mighty Eighth Air Force was formed in Savannah in January 1942. Within one month, they were shipped out to the United Kingdom. Flying Royal Air Force aircraft, the Mighty Eighth became the largest air force of the period. The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is considered by architectural historians to be one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in America. This most important and architecturally significant house was begun in 1816 and completed in 1819.

The Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum is named in honor of the father of the movement charted by local African Americans and adhered to the principles of nonviolent protest. Gilbert came to Savannah as pastor of the historic First African Baptist Church on Franklin Square, where he served from 1939 to 1956.

The newly opened Savannah Children’s Museum is a wonderful open-air playground fantastic for exploring and creative play. Please make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen.

The landscaping is beautiful, with play levels built right into the ruins of the old train depot. Exposed bricks, beams and ironwork are everywhere. The top level has a water table, musical instruments and blocks stations. The second level expands into a huge play area with a maze, playground, book nook, dress-up area, more blocks and oversize board games.

The Savannah History Museum is located in the Main Visitor's Center. The Visitor's Center occupies the building that was originally the Central of Georgia Railway passenger terminal, a National Historic Landmark. Construction of the building begin in the 1850s and was completed in the 1870s. The 'Central of Georgia Railroad' used the building until 1972.
