Hutchinson Island (take Free Ferry Ride)
Savannah, GA 31401
Hutchinson Island is a river island in the Savannah River, north of downtown Savannah. The island is formed where the Back River breaks off to the north from the Savannah River. Historically, Hutchinson Island's land use has been primarily industrial, much of which supported the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest containerization cargo ports in the world. The island is roughly 7 miles long and 1 mile wide at its widest point.
Until recently, most of the island was vacant land. It is now being developed into a major mixed-use development which contains the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort, the Savannah International Maritime Trade and Convention Center, and a significant number of retail and residential properties. Hutchinson Island serves primarily as a resort. Hutchinson Island can be accessible by free ferry or the Talmadge Bridge.
The Club at Savannah Harbor operates an 18-hole golf course managed by Troon Golf and designed by professionals Robert Cupp and Sam Snead. You can take a golf clinic to improve your game or hire a PGA pro for a private lesson. While you tee off on this National Audubon Association certified course, you might get a glimpse of eagles, ospreys, hawks and Stumpy, the alligator who lives on hole 17.
Or you can pamper yourself with a visit to the Heavenly Spa by Westin. You can choose from an array of massages -- deep-tissue, sports, hot river rock and aromatherapy -- or a session in the hydrotherapy tub. The spa also has fitness facilities, where you can work out with a personal trainer, assess your fitness or join a small class.
