The SCAD Theatre was opened on Valentine's Day, 1946. At that time it had one of the largest movie screens in the South and was the first theatre in the Southeast to have adjustable air conditioning.
The theatre seated 1200 people and could accommodate both motion pictures and stage productions. The theatre was quite attractive and also had the best projection equipment and sound devices. Today the theatre continues to have superb state-of-the-art equipment in large part due to SCAD acquiring the building in 1989.
After undergoing major renovations under SCAD’s ownership, the theater reopened in 1998. The theater has played host to both the Savannah Film Festival and the Savannah Music Festival.
