This tour focused on Fort Screven’s Endicott Period Batteries.
These fortifications came about in the late 1880s because the government felt that coastal defenses were not up to par.
They are cement structures and the walls are anywhere from 4-11 feet thick. Sand was taken from the beach and pushed up the front of the structure facing the coast. This made the fortification look like a sand dune. The barrel of a rifle cannon peaked over the very top of the structure – always at the ready for defense against any invading forces.
